American Numismatic Association 2023 Board of Governors Video Forum

2023 American Numismatic Association Board of Governors Election

I participated in the ANA’s Candidate Forum. If you have not had a chance to view it, I am including the link here: https://youtu.be/2gik8YHw8pg

I am running for one of the seven ANA Governor positions and sincerely ask all ANA members for their vote when the ballots are sent in late May or early June of this year. For those of you who do not know me, here is a little bit about me.

My numismatic passion began when I was eight years old. Within two years, I was a member of five local coin and currency clubs as well as a young numismatist (YN) ANA member. In 2013, I received the first of several ANA Summer Seminar scholarships and have had the good fortune of attending every summer seminar since then. The seminars have allowed me to build wonderful relationships with many of the top numismatists around the country as well as making friends with hundreds of collectors.

Eight years ago, I began promoting my numismatic interest on several social media platforms and now have thousands of followers worldwide. This outreach has introduced me to many serious collectors, as we trade thoughts about collecting.

In 2019, I began as a part-time show dealer. In May of that year, I opened the Numismatics with Kenny eBay store. Thanks to my loyal and new customers, I have sold over 27,000 numismatic items.

Also in 2019, the ANA announced I was selected the Young Numismatist of the Year, such a great honor. The ANA also chose me to be the first YN Volunteer District Representative in its history. Through my social media efforts, attending coin shows manning the ANA booth and including ANA membership applications with each of my eBay sales, I am doing my best to promote the ANA.

Last year, the ANA asked three other young adult collectors and myself to write articles for the column opened up by the retirement of Q. David Bowers. As it has been a goal of mine to follow in the steps of Messrs. Bowers and Ken Bressett, I was thrilled to participate.

I am also a charter member of the ANA’s Dr. George F. Health Society – https://www.money.org/HEATH-SOCIETY

I have had multiple internships with NGC and plan to make numismatics my career when I graduate from Seton Hall University, Stillman School of Business in 2024.

Lastly, I give a special thank you to my mentors. Their encouragement played a key role in my embracing the hobby.

If elected Governor, I will represent the collector, dealer, and most importantly the young numismatists. If we all work together, we can grow this exciting and special hobby.

Thank you for taking time to view the forum video and your vote for me.

Mexican Voices in Metal and Paper

This course examines the general perspective of coins, some medals, and paper money that compose Mexican Numismatics, covering the period from 1492 to 1925. The highlights of this topic are the coinage of  Charles and Johanna (1536 – 1571), cobs (1572 – 1733), and klippes (1733 – 1734), on the oddly shaped coinage. We will glance at the Pillar series (1732 – 1771), busts (1772 – 1810), and War of Independence (1810 – 1822) reviewing the issues made by the Emergency Mints outside of Mexico City. Once Mexico gained its independence from Spain we will touch on Iturbide’s coinage and some of the 14 Republican Mints (1822 – 1905). During the French Invasion, coins on behalf of Maximilian were made as the Emperor of Mexico (1863 – 1867), followed by the Republican issues (1867 – 1905). The establishment of the banking system appeared in 1864 and with that the first issues of paper money walked on the streets of Mexico City, extending to the rest of the Republic (1864 – 1915). In 1905 a Monetary Reform occurred and the coin design changed some. By 1913 the first issues of the Mexican Revolución appeared in coins and paper money, ending in 1917 altogether. We will stop this meteoric review with the establishment of the Banco de México, the equivalent of the Federal Reserve, in 1925. Instructor: Ricardo de Leon Tallavas, author and Mexican coinage expert When: July 9, 2020 | 1:00-3:00 PM MDT

2019 ANA Young Numismatist of the Year Winner Announcement – Numismatics with Kenny

2019 ANA Young Numismatist of the Year Winner Announcement – Numismatics with Kenny

I invite you to visit my Numismatics with Kenny eBay store

I just returned from my fifth American Numismatic Association (ANA) Summer Seminar. This year marked the 51st Summer Seminar offered by the ANA and it will always be a very special one for me. Earlier this year, the ANA notified me that I was nominated for this year’s 2019 Young Numismatist of the Year award. A number of wonderful people including Ken Bressett, Steve Roach, Pam Stitely, George Mavrelos, Jim McDermott, Joe Furia, and others sent in letters of reference supporting my nomination.

I have to admit I was a bit nervous during the second week’s closing ceremonies. Several of my YN friends were deserving of the award. The ANA closes each week’s ceremony with the award’s presentation. When the master of ceremonies, Mr. David Sklow, the ANA’s Dwight N. Manley Library Director, began his introduction of the winner, it took me several seconds to realize he was speaking about me. My mind literally went blank as I was overcome with emotion. In just a minute, I will show the presentation but before I do, I want to thank the ANA for this wonderful award.

The ANA has helped me grow not only as a collector but in my personal life too. I was only 13 when I first attended a summer seminar. To say I was shy, would be an understatement but thanks to all of the ANA staff, the adults attending the seminars, and my fellow young numismatists, my confidence grew when it came to my interactions with everyone, public speaking, and leadership as I was offered the opportunity to run the 2018 first week YN Summer Seminar Auction to raise money for future Young Numismatists to receive a scholarship to the Summer Seminars.

I encourage young and experienced collectors to attend at least one Summer Seminar. You will have the opportunity to meet some of the leaders in our hobby, take a course in a numismatic area you are interested taught by an expert in that area, share a week of comradery with others passionate about numismatics, purchase numismatic literature at a great discount, and pick up some great numismatic items during the Young Numismatist auction.

I encourage other Young Numismatists to apply for a Summer Seminar scholarship. The experience will be immeasurable.

If you are not a member of the ANA (adult or youth) and would like information, contact me at numismatistkenny@gmail.comm and I would be pleased to send you an application. By joining the ANA, you will be eligible for many great benefits including borrow from the largest numismatic library in the world, receive the award-winning monthly publication, The Numismatist, discounts on a number of offers, the Coin for A’s program, and much more.

In addition to this video, I have uploaded several other 2019 ANA Summer Seminar videos that I hope you enjoy.

A final thank you to all of my subscribers and viewers here on YouTube, Twitter, my blog, Facebook, and Instagram. I invite viewers who are not already a YouTube subscriber to subscribe below.

Thank you!

Kenny

Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Donates $50,000 to the ANA’s Summer Seminar

Earlier this week, the American Numismatic Association announced the exciting news regarding the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society donation of $50,000. You can read the release below. As many of my readers and followers know, I have been reaching out to numismatists to request a numismatic item be donated to the 2018 ANA Summer Seminar Young Numismatist Scholarship auction. The proceeds pay for young numismatists to attend future ANA Summer Seminars (the cost of the seminar, travel, and room and board).

As you will note in the press release below, the society will match the proceeds earned during the two auctions (the YN auction is held each of the two summer seminar weeks).

If you have not donated a numismatic item for the auction and would like to, please do so by June 8, 2018 so it will arrive before the summer seminar begins. Here is a link to a printable donation form which includes the mailing address of the ANA – Click here for a printable donation form

Or, you can send me an email requesting the donation form or to ask any questions:
click here for an email window to open.

Proceeds earned from the sale of your donated numismatic item(s), at the auction, will now be doubly helpful!

Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Donates

$50,000 to Support ANA’s Summer Seminar Program

The Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society has donated $50,000 to support the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar. The donation includes a “matching” funds campaign to match the proceeds of the Young Numismatists Summer Seminar Benefit Auctions.

The money also provides for the establishment of all-expense paid scholarships for Young Numismatists to attend the event. Titled the “Eric P. Newman Young Numismatist Scholarship Program,” the contribution will help students who otherwise may not be able to attend Summer Seminar, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Eric P. Newman, who became a member of the ANA in 1935, is widely remembered and respected for his work as an author, researcher and speaker. In 1958, Newman and his wife, Evelyn, established the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES), which is dedicated to helping fellow numismatists realize their own potential.

As an ANA Summer Seminar instructor, Newman was an advocate for the program, which seeks to equip numismatists with the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful within the numismatic community.

Held annually on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs (adjacent to the ANA), Summer Seminar is a once-a-year opportunity for numismatic learning and camaraderie that offers students a varied selection of weeklong courses designed for discovery or continued study. For many students, Summer Seminar is a life-changing event; it has catapulted the careers of several of the nation’s most respected collectors, authors and dealers.

“The ANA is so grateful to the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society for their gracious donation,” said Kim Kiick, executive director of the ANA. “This donation supports the importance of numismatics and helps young collectors to grow and advance in their numismatic journeys. We welcome that support.”

The Summer Seminar Benefit Auctions are coordinated entirely by Young Numismatists – everything from acquiring auction items and cataloguing collected items, to organizing and conducting the auction.

Last year, the auctions raised $27,519. The donation from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society will double the amount raised this year by matching auction revenue dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. Anyone is allowed to bid on items. Proceeds support Young Numismatists scholarships and other seminar events. Auction items are still being accepted for the two-week event, which kicks off on June 16. For information on donating an auction item, call Amber Bradish at (719) 482-9865 or email abradish@money.org.

Andy Newman, who is the son of Eric Newman and president of the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, noted that his father was a huge supporter of young collectors. “Dad cared deeply about building knowledge and involvement in young numismatists. He loved giving numismatic badges to Boy Scouts and instructing at the ANA Summer Seminar,” he said. “He would be greatly honored by this association of his name with this fine program.”

“The support from EPNNES for Summer Seminar serves to honor Eric Newman as a distinguished and lifelong leader in the field of numismatics,” said ANA President Gary Adkins. “It also allows the ANA to continue to offer high quality resources and programs to its members, as well as enhance and grow these offerings. We’re very thankful for the support.”

The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its 25,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of instructional and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications and conventions. Here is a video discussing the ANA Summer Seminar and the Young Numismatist auction.

Welcome back to Numismatics with Kenny. Today’s video is a special request made to my subscribers and viewers. As many of you know, the American Numismatic Association conducts their two-week Summer Seminar at the ANA headquarters and Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO each summer. If you have not attended a seminar, I highly recommend you go as you will have the opportunity to meet a number of great numismatists from the United States and some from all over the world. Go to money.org to learn more about attending the seminar and to download the seminar’s course catalog.

I will be attending my fourth Summer Seminar this June and was recently contacted by the ANA to lead the first week’s YN (Young Numismatist) auction. In addition to the great courses, ANA library book sale, the wonderful comradery, a highlight to each week is the YN auction. Each year, the ANA offers a good number of full and partial scholarships to young numismatists to attend the seminar. The scholarships pay for the seminar courses, travel expenses, and room and board. Each week an average of 25 young numismatists join the many adult numismatists who attend the seminar.

The YN auction is the primary fund raiser to pay for these scholarships. Attendees and others who desire to promote our hobby to young collectors contribute numismatic items – US and world coins, ancient coins, tokens, currency, and other numismatic items to the auctions. The young numismatists attending the seminar collect, catalog, head up lot viewing, and run the auction. It is a great experience for all of us. The auction is held on the next to last night of each week’s seminar. All attendees are welcome to bid and as the proceeds go towards the YN scholarship program, the bidders are very generous in their bidding.

And now for my request of you. If you are in agreement that we need to have more young collectors in our great hobby, I ask you to send some numismatic items to this year’s summer seminar. Your generous gift may be tax deductible and is going to a great cause. Any donation is appreciated but if you are wondering what the normal value range of the donated item has been in the past, it normally ranges from $25.00 to well into the hundreds of dollars.

Again, any donated numismatic item is appreciated. When the auction is over, you will receive a thank you letter from the ANA. You can keep the letter for tax purposes. The ANA does not assign a value to your donated item or items. You will determine the value. To donate, simply email me and request a donation form at numismatistkenny@gmail.com or click here for a donation form– the form includes the address to send your donated item(s)and I will send you a donation form by email which includes the ANA’s mailing address.

My email address is noted below in the video’s description. I want to thank Ms. Amber Bradish, Mr. Akio Lis, and the ANA staff for selecting me to be the YN auction lead for week one. With your help, I hope we can raise a significant amount of money so many young numismatists can be awarded scholarships in the future. Thank you so much and please feel free to share this video with other numismatists who enjoy helping young collectors. Specific questions about donating, please contact me at numismatistkenny@gmail.com or the ANA directly at donate@money.org
