Welcome to my Numismatics with Kenny Blog! (Coin Collecting: US & World Coins)

I am a young numismatist and a American Numismatic Association life member and have been collecting coins for more than nine years. Like many numismatists, numismatics has become a passion for me. It does not matter whether its purchasing coins, reading about coins, or discussing the hobby with other collectors, I enjoy it all and hope more young people become young numismatists.

My father and I are members of 5 local coin and currency clubs as well as more than a dozen national and international numismatic clubs and societies. We have made a great deal of new friends over the years and look forward to adding new friends from around the country and the world.

This blog will include recent articles and videos on coins, anything numismatic readers would like to share, and videos I have created on coins and collecting.  Additionally, I have made a number of world coins videos and collection videos of both silver and gold coins.  I also make unboxing videos of coins I purchase online or my father brings me from his many business trips. Look for my educational videos created with the help of local seasoned numismatists and videos I create while attending the ANA summer seminars.

Also, be sure to check out the daily RSS feeds (on the right side of my blog)from Coin World, Numismatic News, and the US Mint. I have recently added a number of additional Numismatic Feeds. You are welcome to bookmark this blog as the RSS feed articles change on a daily basis.

Each day, I tweet or retweet numismatic topics or articles. Some of these appear on this blog.

Whether you collect US Coins or World Coins, you will be able to find great articles and videos here on my blog and on my numismatic youtube channel – click this link to subscribe to my free channel:

Hello, welcome to Numismatics with Kenny. My name is Kenny Sammut and I am a young numismatist and a volunteer District Representative as well as a Life Member of the American Numismatic Association. The American Numismatic Association or ANA for short is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and encouraging people to study and collect coins, paper money and related items.

I created this video for all collectors including children from 5 to 17 as well as seasoned numismatists to consider joining the ANA. There are a number of excellent benefits you will enjoy as a member and the cost to join is very reasonable.
Benefits include:

• Access to the largest lending numismatic library in the world
• Numismatic educational opportunities through the Florence Schook School of Numismatics
• Free admission to the Edward C Rochette Money Museum in Colorado Springs
• Free admission to the annual ANA National Money Show and the World’s Fair of Money
• Opportunity to attend the Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs
• Discounts on books and coin-collecting supplies from the Wizard Coin Supply
• Discounts on members-only savings on products and services from a number of well-known companies

For young members, there are several additional great benefits:
• The Dollar project where you will learn why coin collecting is such a great hobby and will have a chance to earn free coins
• The coins for A’s program. You will receive great coins for excellent report cards – just 3 A’s or more
• Participate in the Ancient Coin project and earn ancient coins
• Apply for a partial of full scholarship to attend the Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs. For me this has been a wonderful benefit as I have attended the last four summers
• Participate in the American Early Copper Coin Project. Earn awards such as early American large coins, reference books, supplies and more
• Receive YN dollars for your participation in coin related activities. These YN dollars can then be used in the monthly YN auctions or the annual online YN auction – I have received a lot of great coins with this benefit

One of the best benefits of all is a subscription to the monthly ANA’s membership magazine – The Numismatist.

You have the option of purchasing a Gold, Platinum, or Life Membership. The platinum membership includes the printed version of The Numismatist which will be mailed to you each month or the Gold membership which includes the electronic version of The Numismatist which can be read online.

Choose the best membership choice for you or your child. Discounts are offered to young collectors.

The coin collecting hobby has been a wonderful experience for me over the past eight years and I encourage everyone and especially young people to take some time to get involved in the hobby:

• Go to the bank and purchase rolls and then search them for neat finds.
• Attend a coin show
• Stop by a coin dealers store
• Join a coin club
• Share the hobby with a parent and child. My dad and I spend a great deal of time together because of coin collecting
• Most of all, get involved in the ANA and become a member – Being a member has been an important reason why my enjoyment and passion for the hobby has continued to grow.

Thank you for watching and I hope you join the ANA. Again, please find the membership link below. Print and fill out the membership form and send it directly to the ANA. If you would like more information about becoming a life member, please email me at numismatistkenny@gmail.com.

Early US Silver Coins and the John Reich Collectors Society – Numismatics with Kenny

Early US Silver Coins and the John Reich Collectors Society

This video is an overview of Early U.S. silver coins and the John Reich Collectors Society (JRCS). The JRCS is a group of collectors who study the U.S. gold and silver coins minted prior to the Liberty Seated series. We hold our annual meeting at the ANA World’s Fair of Money and also meet at the winter FUN show in Florida. All meetings include an educational presentation.

Many JRCS members collect early U.S. silver coins by die marriage. These coins were made using an obverse and a reverse die. A die marriage is the unique combination of these 2 dies. The dies were handmade, so each was slightly different. So even though each series has the same basic design, each die marriage is distinctive.

Our members include beginning collectors as well as recognized experts in this field who are happy to share their knowledge about the coins we love. In this video, a few of our members discuss each of the 5 denominations of early U.S. silver coinage: half dimes, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars.

If you would like to learn more about the John Reich Collectors Society, please visit our website at http://www.jrcs.org. You can download a membership application directly from the website. Dues are $25 a year and in return, you will receive 3 issues of the John Reich Journal (JRJ), the official club publication. The Journal contains articles detailing interesting collecting stories, research papers, and censuses, to name a few. Back issues of the JRJ can be found on the Newman Numismatic Portal at www.nnp.wustl.edu.

The JRCS also supports an official weekly e-newsletter called the JR Newsletter and can be found at www.jr-newsletter.blogspot.com. It’s free to anyone and contains information on upcoming events and new discoveries. It also allows members to keep in touch on a more regular and informal basis. Please consider signing up for the JR Newsletter at jrnewsletter(at)gmail.com.

NumisNews – Solomon Islands $40 Bank Note – 7/16/2018 – Numismatics with Kenny

NumisNews – Solomon Islands $40 Bank Note – 7/16/2018 – Numismatics with Kenny

Hello everybody and welcome back to Numismatics with Kenny. Sorry for the long delay with no videos. Since I’ve been taking tests and finals and exams, I haven’t had any time to even think about this YouTube channel. But now that summer has rolled around, I’ll finally be able to produce and upload some new numismatic content!
Today, I want to roll out one of my new ideas for this channel, called NumisNews. This is where I find an interesting news article about numismatics and I share information about that subject.

The first one is about the Solomon Islands $40 Bank Note that was just released (as of July 2018). As most of you don’t know, the Solomon Islands are celebrating their 40th anniversary of gaining independence from Great Britain. To mark this special anniversary, a limited edition $40 bank note is being released in the Solomon Islands. Limited to 100,000 notes, this polymer is fifth in a series of multi-island and multilingual notes, including a $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes.

De La Rue, a British banknote printer, is producing the notes, just like they do for so many more countries. Adorned, with braille for the blind and even a turtle that glows under ultraviolet light, the Solomon Islands $40 banknote is meant to be a collector’s item. But the Central Bank Governor Denton Rarawa has stated that it will be used in commerce for the purchase of everyday goods.

I credit Coin World and Baknote News for my information and photographs used in this video. https://www.coinworld.com/news/paper-… http://www.banknotenews.com/files/599…

NumisNews – New York Bank Hoard Graded by NGC – 7/19/2018 – Numismatics with Kenny

NumisNews – New York Bank Hoard Graded by NGC – 7/19/2018 – Numismatics with Kenny

Hello everybody and welcome back to Numismatics with Kenny. Here’s my second NumisNews video. For those who don’t know what NumisNews is, it’s a new format that I recently introduced. I pick an interesting subject that’s in a major numismatic publication and then make a video discussing and highlighting the key points.

Today’s NumisNews focuses on the New York Bank Hoard that was graded by NGC. NGC, or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, has just finished grading and certifying a 16,000 Morgan Silver Dollar hoard that was found in sealed US Treasury bags. Left untouched for almost 50 years, the large hoard avoided the normal bag marks. 118 of the Morgans graded MS-67!

16 canvas bags were found in a New York bank vault, each containing exactly 1,000 Morgan Dollars. Here is a breakdown of how many bags of each date and mintmark combination were found. 1878-S (one bag), the 1880-S (two bags), the 1881-S (one bag), the 1883-O (one bag), the 1884-O (one bag), the 1885 (one bag), the 1885-O (two bags), the 1886 (one bag), the 1887 (four bags), the 1888 (one bag) and the 1889 (one bag). From 1964, when the bags were left at the bank by the US Treasury, the bags were passed down from owner to owner of the bank until the current owner decided to seek assistance about the coins.

Jeff Garrett, President of Mid-American Rare Coin Galleries and former President of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), was called in to be the expert and was amazed to see such beautiful Morgans. He stated in an article for the NGC Weekly Market Report that “with each bag being opened, our small group was able to witness the reveal of a numismatic time capsule. The overall quality of the coins is amazing.” NGC graded each with a special label, noting each coin is from the New York Bank Hoard. At the time of this video production, NGC has not identified the name of the bank. Jeff Garrett had more to say on this exciting hoard. “The New York Bank hoard of U.S. Treasury silver dollars was one of the most exciting chapters of my numismatic career.

Now that the hoard has been certified and pedigreed by NGC—and protected by NGC’s secure holder—the coins can be enjoyed by countless other collectors.” These coins will be available for the public to purchase from what NGC calls “major retailers” very soon. I credit NGC’s official website and coinnews.net for the information used in this video.

Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Donates $50,000 to the ANA’s Summer Seminar

Earlier this week, the American Numismatic Association announced the exciting news regarding the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society donation of $50,000. You can read the release below. As many of my readers and followers know, I have been reaching out to numismatists to request a numismatic item be donated to the 2018 ANA Summer Seminar Young Numismatist Scholarship auction. The proceeds pay for young numismatists to attend future ANA Summer Seminars (the cost of the seminar, travel, and room and board).

As you will note in the press release below, the society will match the proceeds earned during the two auctions (the YN auction is held each of the two summer seminar weeks).

If you have not donated a numismatic item for the auction and would like to, please do so by June 8, 2018 so it will arrive before the summer seminar begins. Here is a link to a printable donation form which includes the mailing address of the ANA – Click here for a printable donation form

Or, you can send me an email requesting the donation form or to ask any questions:
click here for an email window to open.

Proceeds earned from the sale of your donated numismatic item(s), at the auction, will now be doubly helpful!

Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society Donates

$50,000 to Support ANA’s Summer Seminar Program

The Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society has donated $50,000 to support the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar. The donation includes a “matching” funds campaign to match the proceeds of the Young Numismatists Summer Seminar Benefit Auctions.

The money also provides for the establishment of all-expense paid scholarships for Young Numismatists to attend the event. Titled the “Eric P. Newman Young Numismatist Scholarship Program,” the contribution will help students who otherwise may not be able to attend Summer Seminar, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Eric P. Newman, who became a member of the ANA in 1935, is widely remembered and respected for his work as an author, researcher and speaker. In 1958, Newman and his wife, Evelyn, established the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES), which is dedicated to helping fellow numismatists realize their own potential.

As an ANA Summer Seminar instructor, Newman was an advocate for the program, which seeks to equip numismatists with the knowledge and skills necessary to become successful within the numismatic community.

Held annually on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs (adjacent to the ANA), Summer Seminar is a once-a-year opportunity for numismatic learning and camaraderie that offers students a varied selection of weeklong courses designed for discovery or continued study. For many students, Summer Seminar is a life-changing event; it has catapulted the careers of several of the nation’s most respected collectors, authors and dealers.

“The ANA is so grateful to the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society for their gracious donation,” said Kim Kiick, executive director of the ANA. “This donation supports the importance of numismatics and helps young collectors to grow and advance in their numismatic journeys. We welcome that support.”

The Summer Seminar Benefit Auctions are coordinated entirely by Young Numismatists – everything from acquiring auction items and cataloguing collected items, to organizing and conducting the auction.

Last year, the auctions raised $27,519. The donation from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society will double the amount raised this year by matching auction revenue dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. Anyone is allowed to bid on items. Proceeds support Young Numismatists scholarships and other seminar events. Auction items are still being accepted for the two-week event, which kicks off on June 16. For information on donating an auction item, call Amber Bradish at (719) 482-9865 or email abradish@money.org.

Andy Newman, who is the son of Eric Newman and president of the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, noted that his father was a huge supporter of young collectors. “Dad cared deeply about building knowledge and involvement in young numismatists. He loved giving numismatic badges to Boy Scouts and instructing at the ANA Summer Seminar,” he said. “He would be greatly honored by this association of his name with this fine program.”

“The support from EPNNES for Summer Seminar serves to honor Eric Newman as a distinguished and lifelong leader in the field of numismatics,” said ANA President Gary Adkins. “It also allows the ANA to continue to offer high quality resources and programs to its members, as well as enhance and grow these offerings. We’re very thankful for the support.”

The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its 25,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of instructional and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications and conventions.
