Welcome to my Numismatics with Kenny Blog! (Coin Collecting: US & World Coins)

I have been collecting coins for more than 10 years. Like many numismatists, the hobby has become a passion for me. It does not matter whether its purchasing coins, reading about coins, or discussing the hobby with other collectors, I enjoy it all and hope more young people become young numismatists.

My father and I are members of 5 local coin and currency clubs. We have made a great deal of new friends over the years and look forward to adding new friends from around the country and the world.

This blog will include recent articles on coins, anything numismatic readers would like to share, and videos I have created on coins and collecting. I am working on creating short informative videos on each coin minted by the US Mint. Eventually, I will include World Coins. In addition, I will share unboxing videos of coins I purchase online or my father brings me from his many business trips. Look for my educational videos created with the help of local seasoned numismatists and videos I create while attending the ANA summer seminars.

Also, be sure to check out the daily RSS feeds (on the right side of my blog)from
Coin World, Numismatic News, and the US Mint.

Whether you collect US Coins or World Coins, you will be able to find great articles and videos here on my blog and on my numismatic youtube channel – click this link to subscribe to my free channel:

Three Dollar Gold Piece – 500th Subscriber Video – Numismatics with Kenny

Thank you to all of my first 500 subscribers. To celebrate, here is a video about the Three Dollar Gold Piece.

This video focuses on the Three Dollar Gold Piece. The coin was designed by James B. Longacre, who also designed the Indian Head Cent and numerous other coins.

This series is especially rare – the highest mintage was in 1854, with only 138,618 coins struck. The lowest mintage was in 1881, with 500 coins struck. This is not including the unique 1870-S, which is part of the Bass Foundation Collection and can be seen in my video “Quarter Eagles and $3 Gold Pieces – Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection at the ANA Money Museum”. Needless to say, every date and mintmark combination in this series is classified as scarce or above.

The 1870-S Three Dollar Gold Piece is unique – there are no other ones in any collection. The coin was sold in a B&R auction in October of 1982 and sold for $687,500 in EF-40. Today, the Red Book estimates the price of the coin, in EF, to be about $6,000,000.

The denomination was minted from 1854 to 1889. They were struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dahlonega, and New Orleans.

The coin was authorized for striking by the Act of February 21, 1853.

Here is a quote from the straight from the Red Book –
“Today, some numismatists theorize that the $3 denomination
Would have been useful for purchasing postage stamps of the day (with their face value of 3 cents) or for acquiring 100 silver three-cent pieces (“trimes”), which were also in circulation at the time.”

Dealing with Numismatics in Your Estate

April 26, 2016 Wilmington Coin Club Presentation (Wilmington, DE) – Mr. Jim McDermott – “Dealing with Numismatics in Your Estate”

Jim shared a very comprehensive presentation reviewing many of the steps all numismatists should take during their estate planning.

We have all heard the horror stories about collectors who failed to take the steps Jim outlines only to have their collections sold for a fraction of what it is worth upon their passing.

Both the Wilmington Coin Club and myself give permission to coin clubs across the country to share this video with its members as we believe all coin collectors will find the information informative and extremely helpful.
